Bass News for January 2025

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. ~2 Corinthians 5:17 LSB

Pastor Dave has been teaching through Romans on Wednesdays and during Sunday School. Join us for Sunday School and for Wednesday worship. You can catch the first seven chapters on the Bass Chapel YouTube channel, and join in the fellowship during these teaching sessions as we move into chapter 9. He has also been preaching through Job. You won't want to miss these sermons, as we move through this great book.

Lee has been sharing the Things Unseen podcast with Sinclair Ferguson.  This is a great resource, and only takes about 5-7 minutes each day. There is also a new devotional from Ligonier with the same title.

Justin has some copies of Jesus and Cancer by Mike Abendroth. If you know someone who would benefit from this short book, let him know. Jesus and Cancer is a condensed version of Cancer Is Not Your Shepherd, which each family received back in the first quarter of 2024.

Spurgeon’s Catechism Questions for January

  • Week of 1/5/25

    • Q29

    • How does the Holy Spirit make the redemption purchased by Christ apply to us?

    • The Holy Spirit makes the redemption purchased by Christ apply to us, by creating faith in us, resulting in uniting us to Christ through our effective calling.

  • Week of 1/12/25

    • Q30

    • What is effective calling?

    • Effective calling is the work of God's Spirit, by which He persuades and enables us to accept Jesus Christ as freely offered to us in the Gospel. The Holy Spirit does this by convincing us of our sin and unhappiness, making the knowledge of Christ clear, and changing our wills.

  • Week of 1/19/25

    • Q31

    • What benefits do those who are effectively called receive in this life?

    • Those who are effectively called receive in this life justification, adoption, sanctification, and the distinct benefits that either accompany them or flow from them.

  • Week of 1/26/25

    • Q32

    • What is justification?

    • Justification is an act of God's free grace, where He pardons all our sins, and accepts us as righteous in His sight, only because of the righteousness Christ credits to us, which is received by faith alone.
